The Wrong Question


The material industry has been looking for the cause in the wrong place.


For decades, we've measured success by asking a familiar question:


How do we win more specifications?


It's a logical question because specifications are visible. They're measurable. They represent the moment one manufacturer is chosen over another, and they often feel like the finish line every material company is chasing.


The problem is that we're asking a question about the outcome while overlooking the forces that created it.

Specifications don't create preference.


They reveal it.


That's a fundamentally different way of looking at how architects and designers make decisions. Once you recognize that distinction, it's remarkably difficult to unsee.


By the time three technically qualified materials are sitting on a conference table, the real work has already been done. Technical performance has been evaluated. Budgets have been discussed. Every product still under consideration is capable of solving the problem it was designed to solve. From the outside, it appears the specification meeting is where one manufacturer wins and another loses.


The reality is more interesting than that.


What we're witnessing is the visible conclusion of a decision that has been quietly unfolding for weeks, months, and sometimes years.


Long before technical data sheets are compared or pricing is requested, architects and designers have already begun collecting impressions that shape which manufacturers feel familiar, credible, and worth considering. Those impressions rarely come from a single defining moment. They accumulate gradually through conversations at trade shows, thoughtfully designed sample presentations, memorable showroom visits, insightful follow-up conversations, project stories shared by trusted colleagues, and dozens of other interactions that seem ordinary in isolation but become remarkably influential when viewed together.


None of those moments specifies a material on its own. Collectively, however, they shape something far more valuable.


They shape what people remember.


And what people remember has an extraordinary influence on what they eventually specify.


Specifications don't create preference
They reveal it.

That's the part we've misunderstood as an industry.


We've spent decades investing in better products, better performance, better sustainability, better fabrication, better certifications, and better technical documentation. Those investments matter, and they always will. They determine whether a product deserves to be considered.


They don't fully explain why one technically qualified manufacturer consistently earns consideration while another offering comparable quality, comparable performance, and comparable technical capability, never occupies the same place in an architect's mind.


Those are two completely different questions.


One asks whether a product is technically capable.


The other asks whether a brand has become mentally available when the opportunity finally appears.


For years, we've treated those questions as though they were inseparable.


They aren't.


And once you recognize that distinction, the industry's biggest question changes.


It is no longer:


How do we win more specifications?


It becomes:


What actually creates preference long before a specification is ever written?



The Pattern I Couldn't Ignore


For years, I thought I was watching material manufacturers compete on products.


The longer I spent in the industry, the more I realized I was watching something much more interesting.


Once I began looking beyond product performance, a pattern appeared that I could no longer ignore.


It didn't matter whether the manufacturer was large or small, established or emerging, family-owned or publicly traded. Different companies had different leadership teams, different marketing budgets, different cultures, and different product portfolios. Yet the same disconnect kept surfacing.


Manufacturers invested extraordinary amounts of time, money, and talent engineering better products while treating the experiences surrounding those products as secondary. New color collections were celebrated. New formulations were announced. Sustainability initiatives expanded. Certifications multiplied. Technical documentation became more comprehensive.


At the same time, many of the experiences architects and designers actually remembered remained remarkably ordinary.

Over the years, I watched companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars developing the next color collection while shipping the same forgettable sample presentation they'd been using for years. I watched leadership teams debate product details for months, then spend only a few minutes discussing what happened after a sample landed on a designer's desk. I watched manufacturers invest heavily in larger trade show booths while the conversations inside those booths sounded almost indistinguishable from every competitor across the aisle.


This wasn't a failure of commitment, investment, or product quality. In many cases, the opposite was true. The manufacturers struggling to build distinction were often producing exceptional materials and solving increasingly complex technical challenges.


The materials industry has become exceptionally good at engineering performance. Products continue to improve. Manufacturing continues to advance. Sustainability initiatives continue to evolve. Technical capabilities continue to expand.


We became extraordinary at engineering products while leaving the experiences surrounding those products largely to chance.o


That contradiction fascinated me.


If technically comparable manufacturers were investing similar resources, building exceptional products, and solving increasingly complex technical challenges, why did some consistently become the brands architects remembered while others remained interchangeable?


Product performance alone couldn't answer that question.


Neither could marketing.


Neither could sales.


Each explained part of the outcome.


None explained the whole.


The more projects I watched unfold, the more convinced I became that I wasn't looking at isolated business activities at all. I was watching the same invisible pattern repeat itself in different forms, regardless of the company, the material category, or the people involved.


The products changed. The companies changed. The projects changed. The pattern never did.

That's when I stopped asking which manufacturer had the better product.

I started asking a different question.


What was happening long before the specification that some companies understood, and others never even realized they were competing on?



The Discovery


For a long time, I could predict the outcome long before I could explain it.


Some manufacturers consistently became part of the conversation. Others, despite producing exceptional materials, struggled to build the same level of recognition or momentum. It happened across different companies, different material categories, different leadership teams, and different markets. The consistency was impossible to ignore, yet none of the conventional explanations ever felt complete.


Product performance, marketing, sales, customer experience, sample presentations, and storytelling all influenced the outcome. Each explained part of what I was seeing. Non explained the whole. Every one of those disciplines influenced the outcome, yet none of them fully explained why some brands consistently became preferred while others remained interchangeable.


The breakthrough came when I stopped evaluating those activities independently and started looking at how they interacted with one another. Instead of asking whether each touchpoint was successful on its own, I began asking what they were collectively producing.


That's when the pattern finally revealed itself.


Whether it was a conversation at NeoCon, an exceptionally designed sample presentation, a memorable showroom visit, a thoughtful follow-up email, or a project story shared by a trusted colleague, every meaningful interaction was quietly contributing to the same destination. Individually, those moments seemed ordinary. Collectively, they shaped what architects and designers remembered, what they trusted, and ultimately what they felt confident specifying when the next opportunity appeared.

That's when everything clicked.


I wasn't looking at branding.


I wasn't looking at marketing.


I wasn't looking at sales.


I was looking at a system.


Looking back, I realized I'd been describing that system for years without recognizing it for what it was. Different manufacturers. Different products. Different projects. Different people. The variables changed constantly.


The underlying pattern never did.


I simply hadn't given it a name.


Now I have.



Preference Engineering™


The intentional design of every interaction, experience, and touchpoint to create memory, trust, preference, and ultimately specification momentum long before purchasing decisions begin.



Once I finally had language for the system, everything else started making sense.


Branding, marketing, sales, sampling, customer experience, showrooms, trade shows, storytelling, websites, and follow-up were never competing priorities. They were all contributing to the same outcome. Every interaction either strengthened future preference or quietly weakened it. Every experience either reinforced the impression a brand was building or diluted it.


Suddenly, the questions I'd been asking for years no longer seemed important.


I stopped asking whether a trade show was successful.


I stopped asking whether a sample presentation looked impressive.


I stopped asking whether a website won design awards.


The better question was much simpler.


How is this engineering preference?

Everything else became secondary.


Because once you understand how preference is created, the specification is no longer the mystery.


It's the outcome.



What Changes Now?


Once I began looking at the materials industry through the lens of Preference Engineering™, it became impossible to see branding, marketing, sales, and customer experience as separate disciplines.


They weren't separate.


They were parts of the same system.


A trade show was no longer simply an event on the calendar. It became an opportunity to influence what architects and designers would remember months later when the right project appeared. A sample presentation was no longer just a vehicle for delivering material. It became an opportunity to shape confidence before a specification was ever written.


The same was true of showrooms, websites, project photography, follow-up conversations, technical documentation, customer service, and every interaction in between. Individually, they appeared to serve different purposes. Collectively, they were all contributing to the same outcome.


Preference.

That's why I no longer think material manufacturers are competing only on product performance.


They're competing to become the brand that comes to mind when an architect begins thinking about solutions. They're competing to become the brand that's remembered, trusted, recommended, and ultimately specified. Not because it shouted the loudest, but because it consistently created experiences worth remembering.


That's a very different competitive landscape.


It also explains why companies with technically comparable products often achieve dramatically different business results. The difference isn't always found in the material itself. More often, it's found in everything surrounding the material. One company treats those experiences as disconnected marketing activities. Another intentionally designs them to reinforce one another until preference becomes the natural outcome.


That's the difference between hoping preference happens & intentionally engineering it.


For years, we've asked:


How do we win more specifications?


It's the wrong question because it focuses on the final decision instead of everything that quietly shapes it.


A better question is:


How are we engineering preference long before the specification ever begins?


That question changes where we invest.


It changes what we measure.


It changes what leadership values.


Most importantly, it changes how we compete.


The companies that lead the next generation of the materials industry won't necessarily be the ones with the longest history, the largest product portfolio, or the biggest marketing budget. They'll be the companies that understand every interaction is shaping future preference and have the discipline to design those interactions with the same intention they've always applied to engineering their products.


They're not simply building better materials.


They're building brands people remember.


Preference doesn't happen.
Preference is engineered.

Because when preference is intentionally engineered, specifications stop feeling unpredictable.


They become the natural outcome of everything that came before.

Think about the last project your company won.


Forget the day it was specified.


Go back six months.


What happened during those months that made your brand memorable enough to be invited into the conversation in the first place?


Now ask yourself one more question.


Was that outcome intentional... or accidental?



Preference doesn't happen.


Preference is engineered.


Because nobody specifies a brand they don't remember.
